Texas Political Memorabilia: Buttons, Bumper Stickers, and Broadsides (Clifton and Shirley Caldwell Texas Heritage Series)
Texas Political Memorabilia: Buttons, Bumper Stickers, and Broadsides (Clifton and Shirley Caldwell Texas Heritage Series) 'Through buttons and bumper stickers and the like, Bailey has found a new way to tell the history of Texas politics...To peruse Bailey's collection is to realize how much the business of politics has changed. Many of the items featured here date from an era when there was no television and no polls. Candidates used them as they use the mass media today: to get their names before the public...Bailey's collection...brings Texas political history alive'.Paul Burka, from the foreword Texas politicians are a lively, sometimes controversial, always entertaining breed, and the ways they have chosen to put themselves and their messages before the public are equally as interesting. Anything and everything that can be printed with a candidate's name, image, and slogan - from buttons and bumper stickers to chewing gum, pocket knives, and plastic pickles - is likely to turn up in a Texas political campaign. Though many consider these items ephemeral, collectors value political memorabilia as a fascinating 'sound bite' record of the candidates and issues that engaged the voting public over decades." Texas Political Memorabilia" presents just such a pictorial history of Texas politics, the first ever compiled. Drawn from the vast personal collection of Chuck Bailey and augmented with items from other private and public collections, this book presents the most exceptional, most memorable, and most informative examples of Texas political memorabilia. The featured items cover everything from the presidential campaigns of Lyndon Johnson and both George Bushes, to U.S. House and Senate elections, to statewide races for governor and the Texas House and Senate, to county and city elections. All the major figures of twentieth-century Texas politics - as well as Sam Houston and Davy Crockett - are represented in the book. To set the images in context, Chuck Bailey and Bill Crawford provide background on the candidates, races, and issues that inspired many of the pieces pictured in the book. From LBJ's Stetson-shaped ashtrays to Jake Pickle's plastic squeaker pickles to George W. Bush's 'W' buttons, "Texas Political Memorabilia" is a treasure trove of the nuts and bolts and buttons of Texas politics.

Resolved Question: How long should the bumper stickers stay on?
How long is it proper to leave bumper stickers from a political campaign on? At some point, keeping the stickers on for the losing candidate is counter productive. It shows an unwillingness to accept the results of the election and it is divisive. I am just not sure at what point, time wise, it becomes a problem. This question is posted in etiquette, not politics. I know I have every RIGHT to leave the stickers on, but I feel that at a certain point it becomes classless. (more...)

Resolved Question: Why does Minn Sec'y of State have a bumper sticker that says "The Recount's not done until Al Franken's won"?
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,449334,00.html The Associated Press piece with the title ?Most Minn. Senate ?undervotes? are from Obama turf? misinformed readers about what undervotes really imply. The Minneapolis Star Tribune headline similarly claimed "An analysis of ballots that had a vote for president but no vote for U.S. senator could have recount implications." Voters themselves insert their ballot into the machine that reads and records their votes, and if the machine finds that a vote isn?t recorded, voters can either mark the race that they forgot to mark or didn?t mark clearly. Or if voters ?overvoted? and accidentally marked too many candidates, voters can also get a fresh ballot. There should be no role to divine voters? intentions. If a voter wanted a vote recorded for a particular race, the machine tells him whether his vote in all the races was counted. But voters also have the right not to vote in particular races. In this election, 0.4 percent of Minnesotans didn?t want to vote for president. The number for the Senate race was only slightly higher at 0.8 percent. For congressional and state House races, the rates were 3 and 3.5 percent. (more...)

Resolved Question: Why are Republicans so un-patriotic?
There are a bunch of them around here wanting to order "Impeach Obama" bumper stickers already. (Even though he's not in office yet, and has certainly not committed an impeachable offense, like, say... lying to put our country into war...) Why can't they follow the lead of McCain who said "Support your President?" He was elected by a larger majority than Bush ever had. What part of "valid election" don't they understand? Why do they want to tear our country apart when we finally have a President who's trying to bring us together? Josh: Look at the answers directly above and below you. THAT'S why I make the statements I do - based on these morons. And apparently most of you can't tell the difference between a popular president-elect and a war criminal. I agree that it's patriotic to question your gov't (big fan of Thomas Jefferson), but the big difference is that Bush destroyed our country (and our economy) and Obama hasn't even been sworn in yet. Voting Question: Will the Obama administration do anything to improve race relations for all races?
I've been hearing throughout the entire campaign about how much good Obama was going to do for race relations. I loved it personally. Then, on election night, I was nearly assaulted by 3 black men who were screaming at me "Obama 08 you [expletive] cracker!" while I was minding my own business putting oil in my car at a gas station. I have no bumper stickers or anything to indicate how I voted. When I told other people about this, I was shocked at the response. I was accused of making up the story for either attention or to discredit the Obama campaign! I was even accused of "white guilt". Will this administration do anything to open eyes to all forms of racism instead of only the PC ones? (more...)
