I got to thinking about the $700 billion bailout plan and how Paulson has waffled and now wants to spend it in what he feels is a better way for the country. Let me make my suggestion on how a portion of that money could be spent. In 2002 the U.S ... (more...)

Resolved Question: What can I do about a hostile work environment?
I am not interested in suing or anything, but I would like some advice on how best to handle a situation in which my boss continually makes disparaging comments about our new president-elect, an opinion that is in direct conflict with my own. At first it was just offhanded stuff that really wasn't a big deal and simply reflected his opinion, which he of course is entitled to have. I choose not to engage such conversation at work. One, because I don't feel that anything I say will change his mind or even just cause him to be more open minded toward the opinions of others. And two, because I find such talk completely inapropriate for the workplace. (We work in a professional office, managing people's investments and retirement funds.) But today I overheard my boss (within earshot of my desk and at a volume that could clearly be heard by me) gleefully laughing with a client by telephone about issues of race. He shared a story about a bumper sticker he saw that insinuated a connection between Barack Obama and Saddam Hussein (believe me, I'm fully aware of Barack's middle name, which he himself has acknowledged as being a bit 'funny'). Am I out of line in thinking that this sort of conversation is completely inappropriate for the workplace? A joke is a joke is a joke, and am trying not to be overly sensitive here... but I found the comment to be extremely offensive. Anyway, I would appreciate any and all advice. If you suggest that I address the matter in private with him or with my direct supervisor, please suggest some appropriate things to say so it doesn't sound like I'm totally blowing something out of proportion. I work in a very small office of only three other people, all of whom are in opposition to my political affiliation. I AM NOT ASKING FOR POLITICAL COMMENTARY, so please leave such opinions out of your remarks. If you don't want to give me a serious answer you can simply type a happy face and get the same number of points ;) Thank you for your time. ModelFlyerChick- Thank you for your answer. Just to clarify, this particular boss (I work for a married couple and this is the husband I am speaking of) has a terrible habit of not following up on client issues, and it is the unspoken policy between myself and the other lady that works there (who is considered my supervisor) that we HAVE to listen in on his conversations, regardless of whatever else we are working on... simply because he has been known to drop the ball so often. He is aware of that too, and often complements us on taking the lead and basically "cleaning up" his messes. I am greatly appreciative of all of the other folks' comments as well. I will try and maintain an even-tempered outlook. My difference in political opinions is known to my co-workers and it hasn't caused waves in the past. I do my job, I do it well, and (I thought) they respect me for it. I will ponder your thoughts with great consideration. My sincerest thanks to all of you... (more...)

Voting Question: Anyone's car ever been vandalized because of political stickers?
With the election around the corner, I wanted to show my support for Obama. My hubby got me a bumper sticker, but I'm afraid to put it on my car. A few years ago, I put an anti-Bush sticker on my car (one of those funny-"a village in Texas has lost its idiot"). The very next day I walked outside and my car had been keyed. Not having any enemies, I had to assume someone did it because of my bumper sticker. Anyone else ever have this happen, Republican or Democrat (although I can imagine a Dem doing such a thing)? Would you risk it again? (more...)

Voting Question: i have a political question?
those losers on politics were to damn lazy to answer mine so im posting it on surveys. you know those bumper stickers that tie Republicans with Voldemort (eg "Voldemort votes Republican" or "Republicans for Voldemort") I was wondering, are those an attack on Reps or not. I mean Voldemort is the evil wizard guy from Harry Potter so I see how it could be against Reps, but I think Voldemort is pretty cool with like his black hood and stuff. I find them funny either way.
