Texas Political Memorabilia: Buttons, Bumper Stickers, and Broadsides (Clifton and Shirley Caldwell Texas Heritage Series)
Texas Political Memorabilia: Buttons, Bumper Stickers, and Broadsides (Clifton and Shirley Caldwell Texas Heritage Series) 'Through buttons and bumper stickers and the like, Bailey has found a new way to tell the history of Texas politics...To peruse Bailey's collection is to realize how much the business of politics has changed. Many of the items featured here date from an era when there was no television and no polls. Candidates used them as they use the mass media today: to get their names before the public...Bailey's collection...brings Texas political history alive'.Paul Burka, from the foreword Texas politicians are a lively, sometimes controversial, always entertaining breed, and the ways they have chosen to put themselves and their messages before the public are equally as interesting. Anything and everything that can be printed with a candidate's name, image, and slogan - from buttons and bumper stickers to chewing gum, pocket knives, and plastic pickles - is likely to turn up in a Texas political campaign. Though many consider these items ephemeral, collectors value political memorabilia as a fascinating 'sound bite' record of the candidates and issues that engaged the voting public over decades." Texas Political Memorabilia" presents just such a pictorial history of Texas politics, the first ever compiled. Drawn from the vast personal collection of Chuck Bailey and augmented with items from other private and public collections, this book presents the most exceptional, most memorable, and most informative examples of Texas political memorabilia. The featured items cover everything from the presidential campaigns of Lyndon Johnson and both George Bushes, to U.S. House and Senate elections, to statewide races for governor and the Texas House and Senate, to county and city elections. All the major figures of twentieth-century Texas politics - as well as Sam Houston and Davy Crockett - are represented in the book. To set the images in context, Chuck Bailey and Bill Crawford provide background on the candidates, races, and issues that inspired many of the pieces pictured in the book. From LBJ's Stetson-shaped ashtrays to Jake Pickle's plastic squeaker pickles to George W. Bush's 'W' buttons, "Texas Political Memorabilia" is a treasure trove of the nuts and bolts and buttons of Texas politics.

Resolved Question: How long should the bumper stickers stay on?
How long is it proper to leave bumper stickers from a political campaign on? At some point, keeping the stickers on for the losing candidate is counter productive. It shows an unwillingness to accept the results of the election and it is divisive. I am just not sure at what point, time wise, it becomes a problem. This question is posted in etiquette, not politics. I know I have every RIGHT to leave the stickers on, but I feel that at a certain point it becomes classless. (more...)

Resolved Question: Here are the two choices for candidates which one has the most experience?
1.McCain a REAL PATRIOT has 17 Medals, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and 4 Commendations and 2 Citations,to earn those commendations,McCain stayed in the POW camp, not for future political leverage, but because he put the good of all before his own well being. That alone is proof of a great leader!! What do you have an Obama bumper sticker? 2.Obama the Junior Senator. He has only been a Senator for 18 months. But with all the recesses, four day weekends, campaigning and absences, Obama has only spent about 6 weeks of workdays on the Senate floor as one of the most extreme liberal junior Senators, voted with his party 97% of the time according to an independent study (the highest percentage of any senator). Most of his votes, about 80% when he was not absent, have been "present" or "abstain". He also chairs a committee on Afghanistan that has never met because the chairman has never called a meeting. As a trial lawyer he only tried 14 cases in court - and minor ones at that. As a "community organizer" his major cause was getting the asbestos out of a housing project. After 2 years of trying, the asbestos was still there when he left and is still there even now that he is a Senator and presumably has some pull to get things done. That's it. Obama's entire real world work resume. 145 days experience in the Senate with nothing to show for it, only 3 bills passed. Zero military experience, Quick trip to Middle East, Never physically worked a hard day in his life??Barack Obama barely qualifies to work in a McDonalds. We wont even mention his devotion to extremist, radical and racist religious views for which he was ingrained and worshipped for the past twenty years. Two years as a lawyer and only 14 minor trials. And two years as a "community organizer" with nothing accomplished. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one to chose does it? (more...)

Resolved Question: Was it a good idea for a McCain aide to refer to Palin as a "whack job" at this point in the race?
One of John McCain's advisers recently called his running mate Sarah Palin a "diva" after she went off-script at a rally, and suggested she was looking after her own political future over the current campaign. Now another adviser ups the ante in a conversation with the Politico's Playbook, labeling Palin a "whack job." Meanwhile, Dana Milbank reports on more signs of division between McCain and his running mate on the stump: "Sarah Oh-Twelve!" bellowed a man in field coat and jeans, one of several thousand at the Leesburg rally, when Palin spoke about her tax policies yesterday. The oh-twelve message, if mathematically flawed, seemed to capture the crowd's sentiment. There were "I [Heart] Palin" bumper stickers on cars, "Team Sarah" T-shirts in pink, "Sarah!" pins and countless signs: "You Go Girl." "You're in Palin Country." "Maverick Barracuda." One of the souvenir vendors said his most popular offering was a pin showing Palin next to a pit bull and the usual "McCain-Palin" logo reversed, with her name first and in larger letters. ... The diva made sure to spend some time on her "own track record" in Alaska, particularly all the taxes she cut. "Sarah! Sarah!" the crowd chanted. "So, Virginia, will you hire us?" she asked. "Will you send us to Washington?" "Yes, we will! Yes, we will!" In 2012, that is. Do you think the McCain campaign is regretting their choice? (more...)
